Narrative:

Checked in at XA10 phx time. Flew one leg to tucson. Major mechanical involving #2 engine and #left-2 door handle vibrating unlocked in-flight. 3 1/2 hour delay. Maintenance ran engine and said it was ok for continued flight per maintenance manual. We took off back to phx. Same engine problem and another door problem. Aircraft removed from service in phx. I went upstairs to maintenance control. They knew all along the engine wasn't correct and just had maintenance sign it off to get it to phx. We got another aircraft and went to el paso. Called scheduling and asked if we were going to hotel in el paso, or were we to go to las then back to el paso. They said to continue. I told them barring a miracle we would have to stop in las. My first officer fell asleep on descent into las for a few seconds. I stopped the operation in las, was told to report to las operations and await phone call from chief pilot. I did. Told him the story. He said good judgement. Monday afternoon received phone call while I was on layover in tucson from B737 fleet manager stating the senior vp of operations wanted an investigation as to why I refused trip that was only 12 hours 45 min duty day with a planned arrival into elp at XA30. Possible severe disciplinary action to follow. Since my first officer and I are commuters, they are trying to say we didn't show up rested which is untrue. They do not understand the problems of crappy maintenance and the associated fatigue of dealing with poor maintenance or no maintenance.
