Narrative:

I was IFR in cavu conditions en route hpn-bhb on a pleasure trip with my wife in a rented piper arrow. I don't remember who we were talking to -- either ZBW or pwm approach. Traffic was pointed out to me, a commercial passenger jet (major airline), I don't remember the type, 9 O'clock, 1000 ft higher, inbound to portland, which was about 10 mi off our right side. We each reported the other in sight, and I was vectored to pass behind and below him as he began his descent. We crossed his wake at approximately 90 degrees to his flight path and felt a short series of moderate bumps. I believe a much more serious encounter would have resulted had our flight paths been parallel. I should have taken a more proactive stance in requesting a different vector, or a climb to top his flight path. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter participated in wake turbulence callback, see separate report.

Narrative: I WAS IFR IN CAVU CONDITIONS ENRTE HPN-BHB ON A PLEASURE TRIP WITH MY WIFE IN A RENTED PIPER ARROW. I DON'T REMEMBER WHO WE WERE TALKING TO -- EITHER ZBW OR PWM APCH. TFC WAS POINTED OUT TO ME, A COMMERCIAL PAX JET (MAJOR AIRLINE), I DON'T REMEMBER THE TYPE, 9 O'CLOCK, 1000 FT HIGHER, INBOUND TO PORTLAND, WHICH WAS ABOUT 10 MI OFF OUR R SIDE. WE EACH RPTED THE OTHER IN SIGHT, AND I WAS VECTORED TO PASS BEHIND AND BELOW HIM AS HE BEGAN HIS DSCNT. WE CROSSED HIS WAKE AT APPROX 90 DEGS TO HIS FLT PATH AND FELT A SHORT SERIES OF MODERATE BUMPS. I BELIEVE A MUCH MORE SERIOUS ENCOUNTER WOULD HAVE RESULTED HAD OUR FLT PATHS BEEN PARALLEL. I SHOULD HAVE TAKEN A MORE PROACTIVE STANCE IN REQUESTING A DIFFERENT VECTOR, OR A CLB TO TOP HIS FLT PATH. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR PARTICIPATED IN WAKE TURB CALLBACK, SEE SEPARATE RPT.
