Narrative:

I was in the process of completing FAA observed ride for captain. The fuel gauges were deferred as per the MEL, as worded on the write-up, that the right gauge appears to be reading higher than the left, so they were written up. But the mechanic deferred both gauges inoperative. The MEL says only one gauge can be deemed inoperative. My fault was not reading the correct wording on the paperwork to insure the write-up reflected what the MEL wording was.

Title: STUDENT CAPT UP FOR A RATING RIDE FAILS TO INTERPRET THE LOGBOOK WRITE-UP ON THE FUEL GAUGES AS RELATED TO THE MEL. THE MECH HAD MEL'ED BOTH GAUGES INCORRECTLY. RPTR OBVIOUSLY HAD THEN ACCEPTED THE ACFT IN THAT CONDITION. NOT A GOOD THING ON A CHK RIDE.
