Narrative:

On final approach to btv. I selected gear down. We received a right main gear unsafe indication. We proceeded with the gear unsafe checklist and procedures. There was still an unsafe indication. Before proceeding with the emergency landing checklist, the captain suggested we contact maintenance to discuss possible alternatives and I agreed. I took the controls and monitored tower frequency while the captain spoke with maintenance over #2 radio. After a short time the captain advised me that based on his discussion with maintenance, their decision was that the gear was safe. He explained that their decision was based on the absence of a confign warning with flaps 20 degrees, and the hydraulic pump had shut off. Therefore the captain did not feel it was necessary to make an emergency landing. I agreed based on the captain's reputation and experience. A normal landing was made without incident. However, upon visual inspection, the down lock was jammed by a broken spring rendering it unsafe. The factors that had affected the discontinuation of the checklist and to make a normal landing was the inadequate information from maintenance. The reasons given by maintenance were far from correct. However, the checklist was correct.

Title: ACFT EQUIP PROB. UNSAFE LNDG GEAR INDICATION. JAMMED DOWN-LOCK SPRING DISCOVERED AFTER LNDG. COM WITH COMPANY MAINT DETERMINED A NORMAL LNDG COULD BE MADE.

Narrative: ON FINAL APCH TO BTV. I SELECTED GEAR DOWN. WE RECEIVED A R MAIN GEAR UNSAFE INDICATION. WE PROCEEDED WITH THE GEAR UNSAFE CHKLIST AND PROCS. THERE WAS STILL AN UNSAFE INDICATION. BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE EMER LNDG CHKLIST, THE CAPT SUGGESTED WE CONTACT MAINT TO DISCUSS POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVES AND I AGREED. I TOOK THE CTLS AND MONITORED TWR FREQ WHILE THE CAPT SPOKE WITH MAINT OVER #2 RADIO. AFTER A SHORT TIME THE CAPT ADVISED ME THAT BASED ON HIS DISCUSSION WITH MAINT, THEIR DECISION WAS THAT THE GEAR WAS SAFE. HE EXPLAINED THAT THEIR DECISION WAS BASED ON THE ABSENCE OF A CONFIGN WARNING WITH FLAPS 20 DEGS, AND THE HYD PUMP HAD SHUT OFF. THEREFORE THE CAPT DID NOT FEEL IT WAS NECESSARY TO MAKE AN EMER LNDG. I AGREED BASED ON THE CAPT'S REPUTATION AND EXPERIENCE. A NORMAL LNDG WAS MADE WITHOUT INCIDENT. HOWEVER, UPON VISUAL INSPECTION, THE DOWN LOCK WAS JAMMED BY A BROKEN SPRING RENDERING IT UNSAFE. THE FACTORS THAT HAD AFFECTED THE DISCONTINUATION OF THE CHKLIST AND TO MAKE A NORMAL LNDG WAS THE INADEQUATE INFO FROM MAINT. THE REASONS GIVEN BY MAINT WERE FAR FROM CORRECT. HOWEVER, THE CHKLIST WAS CORRECT.
