Narrative:

Delays were abundant during the afternoon. Arriving in memphis, the captain asked me to check with clearance delivery to see if we had a delay on return to stl. At the same time I picked up our clearance, mem 5 departure, maintain 3000 ft. I set our altitude reminder/flight director to 3000 ft at this time. During engine start (approximately 25 mins later) the display is usually lost. I glanced down at the clearance card and saw 5 (mem 5) and set 5000 ft in the display. After departing, we climbed to 5000 ft and were questioned by the controller. In addition, prior to takeoff we were advised at an inappropriate time about traffic arriving on a crossing runway. When I was questioned, I knew I had mistakenly put the wrong altitude in the display.

Title: FLC OF AN ATR42 OVERSHOT CLB ALT DURING A SID DEP DUE TO SETTING THE WRONG ALT IN THE ACFT FMS AND THE ALT ALERTER.

Narrative: DELAYS WERE ABUNDANT DURING THE AFTERNOON. ARRIVING IN MEMPHIS, THE CAPT ASKED ME TO CHK WITH CLRNC DELIVERY TO SEE IF WE HAD A DELAY ON RETURN TO STL. AT THE SAME TIME I PICKED UP OUR CLRNC, MEM 5 DEP, MAINTAIN 3000 FT. I SET OUR ALT REMINDER/FLT DIRECTOR TO 3000 FT AT THIS TIME. DURING ENG START (APPROX 25 MINS LATER) THE DISPLAY IS USUALLY LOST. I GLANCED DOWN AT THE CLRNC CARD AND SAW 5 (MEM 5) AND SET 5000 FT IN THE DISPLAY. AFTER DEPARTING, WE CLBED TO 5000 FT AND WERE QUESTIONED BY THE CTLR. IN ADDITION, PRIOR TO TKOF WE WERE ADVISED AT AN INAPPROPRIATE TIME ABOUT TFC ARRIVING ON A XING RWY. WHEN I WAS QUESTIONED, I KNEW I HAD MISTAKENLY PUT THE WRONG ALT IN THE DISPLAY.
