Narrative:

I was on a primary training flight with a student and were approaching the airport from the east for landing at beverly airport. The congestion on the radio was heavy and I called on initial contact at what I estimated to be 4 NM from the field. Tower called back and informed me I was actually approximately 3 mi from field, and could I call them sooner next time. I said I would and apologized and that was the end of it. I proceeded to do 1 touch and go and then made a full stop and didn't hear anything from it. The next day I was told the FSDO (bedford) was called and reported.
