Narrative:

We arrived at ind 20 mins late and had a leading edge flap light problem. Upon arrival at the gate the operations agent advised me that we would have a FAA safety inspector onboard to mdw. The inspector, a mr X, came to the cockpit and introduced himself and I checked his papers then I told him I needed to get out of the cockpit to take care of a MEL item. I returned and had to get around him and then leave again. I then jumped into my seat and we were now 35 mins late with the chance to be back on time out of (midway) mdw. The inspector asked to see my medical and certificate and I said ok but would show it to him in the air since we were 35 mins late. He said nothing. We completed the checklist and then I asked him to turn on his oxygen and audio panel. While taxiing out I could see he was not happy. Then while still taxiing in a sterile cockpit environment he made a comment, 'how do I know you have a B737 type rating.' I stopped the aircraft and set the brake and told him that all my paperwork was on file in air carrier and is checked by his peers and if he continued to disrupt this aircraft I would return to the gate and ask him to leave. Several other words were exchanged. Out of 10000 ft I offered my medical and certificate to him as promised and he told me that he didn't need to see them now. After arrival at the gate in mdw, he was slow to get out of his seat. I asked if he had anything for us and he responded that I would be hearing from him and that he had told me that I was in violation of taking off after he said he would violate me without showing him my papers. I told him that I did not hear him say that but only that he asked if I was typed in the aircraft. I told him I was trying to get the aircraft back on time and he said that since we were late it did not hurt to be later. There was more words, but this is the gist of it.
