Narrative:

As a captain qualified first officer, I was PNF. Captain was flying. We were on tower after takeoff. When I completed the after takeoff checklist, I called company with our off times. There was a discrepancy on the load manifest that company was telling me about. Meanwhile, the captain was talking to tower who handed us off to departure. After I completed my conversation with company, I looked over at the altitude alerter which was set at 4000 ft, and our altitude was climbing through 4700 ft. I immediately asked the captain what our altitude was and he exclaimed and started back down to 4000 ft. At this point we had not talked to departure yet. When we called departure they didn't say anything about the altitude conflict and cleared us to 13000 ft. The captain had been sick the previous 2 days and was saying he wasn't feeling well. In fact, he called in sick for the next day while we were at work. This captain is a marginal performer when he is feeling well and should not fly at all when he is sick because he makes many mistakes. There should be no pressure on pilots at all (including self-imposed) to return to work before they are feeling totally fit for flight.

Title: BE02 ALTDEV ALT OVERSHOT IN CLB. NIGHT OP.

Narrative: AS A CAPT QUALIFIED FO, I WAS PNF. CAPT WAS FLYING. WE WERE ON TWR AFTER TKOF. WHEN I COMPLETED THE AFTER TKOF CHKLIST, I CALLED COMPANY WITH OUR OFF TIMES. THERE WAS A DISCREPANCY ON THE LOAD MANIFEST THAT COMPANY WAS TELLING ME ABOUT. MEANWHILE, THE CAPT WAS TALKING TO TWR WHO HANDED US OFF TO DEP. AFTER I COMPLETED MY CONVERSATION WITH COMPANY, I LOOKED OVER AT THE ALT ALERTER WHICH WAS SET AT 4000 FT, AND OUR ALT WAS CLBING THROUGH 4700 FT. I IMMEDIATELY ASKED THE CAPT WHAT OUR ALT WAS AND HE EXCLAIMED AND STARTED BACK DOWN TO 4000 FT. AT THIS POINT WE HAD NOT TALKED TO DEP YET. WHEN WE CALLED DEP THEY DIDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT THE ALT CONFLICT AND CLRED US TO 13000 FT. THE CAPT HAD BEEN SICK THE PREVIOUS 2 DAYS AND WAS SAYING HE WASN'T FEELING WELL. IN FACT, HE CALLED IN SICK FOR THE NEXT DAY WHILE WE WERE AT WORK. THIS CAPT IS A MARGINAL PERFORMER WHEN HE IS FEELING WELL AND SHOULD NOT FLY AT ALL WHEN HE IS SICK BECAUSE HE MAKES MANY MISTAKES. THERE SHOULD BE NO PRESSURE ON PLTS AT ALL (INCLUDING SELF-IMPOSED) TO RETURN TO WORK BEFORE THEY ARE FEELING TOTALLY FIT FOR FLT.
