Narrative:

The flight was initially cleared to 3000 ft then was reclred to 5000 ft. Climbing through 4000 ft the '4000 ft for 5000 ft -- armed' call was made. Subsequently, a 70 degree heading change was issued by ATC. During the turn, the aural warning system announced 'altitude.' the plane was above the assigned altitude of 5000 ft and was quickly returned to the assigned altitude. ATC inquired about our altitude as the correction was being made.

Title: AN MD80 CREW CLBED ABOVE ITS ASSIGNED ALT.

Narrative: THE FLT WAS INITIALLY CLRED TO 3000 FT THEN WAS RECLRED TO 5000 FT. CLBING THROUGH 4000 FT THE '4000 FT FOR 5000 FT -- ARMED' CALL WAS MADE. SUBSEQUENTLY, A 70 DEG HDG CHANGE WAS ISSUED BY ATC. DURING THE TURN, THE AURAL WARNING SYS ANNOUNCED 'ALT.' THE PLANE WAS ABOVE THE ASSIGNED ALT OF 5000 FT AND WAS QUICKLY RETURNED TO THE ASSIGNED ALT. ATC INQUIRED ABOUT OUR ALT AS THE CORRECTION WAS BEING MADE.
