Narrative:

Tried to call up our pre departure clearance using ACARS equipment and was unable, and called clearance delivery to obtain clearance. They said we had a rerte and that is why the pre departure clearance would not work on ACARS. The new clearance read: direct ood, the ood 198 degree radial to the sby 014 degree radial, direct sby then J-79 to fkn, the fkn 249 degree radial, 50 direct flo J4 irq sinca 3, etc. (Try reading all this in 1 breath). I don't understand why a rerte cannot be passed through a pre departure clearance and received on ACARS. It would relieve congestion on the radio, and a hard copy is produced via our printer in the aircraft to delete any confusion on the readback. My recommendation is to allow rertes to be relayed via the pre departure clearance and if needed, confirm with ATC that you received it. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: reporter did not know why ATC was unable to forward the rerte via ACARS. He said the aircraft was a B767. He said he would try to find out and send a new report referencing this one to explain why.

Original NASA ASRS Text

Title: WHEN AN AMENDED CLRNC WAS RECEIVED, IT WAS VERBALLY ON VHF. RPTR WONDERS WHY RERTES CANNOT BE SENT VIA ACARS AS IS THE PDC. THE LENGTHY RERTE CLRNC TOOK A LONG TIME TO XMIT AND IT LACKED A HARD COPY THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN PROVIDED BY THE ACARS.

Narrative: TRIED TO CALL UP OUR PDC USING ACARS EQUIP AND WAS UNABLE, AND CALLED CLRNC DELIVERY TO OBTAIN CLRNC. THEY SAID WE HAD A RERTE AND THAT IS WHY THE PDC WOULD NOT WORK ON ACARS. THE NEW CLRNC READ: DIRECT OOD, THE OOD 198 DEG RADIAL TO THE SBY 014 DEG RADIAL, DIRECT SBY THEN J-79 TO FKN, THE FKN 249 DEG RADIAL, 50 DIRECT FLO J4 IRQ SINCA 3, ETC. (TRY READING ALL THIS IN 1 BREATH). I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY A RERTE CANNOT BE PASSED THROUGH A PDC AND RECEIVED ON ACARS. IT WOULD RELIEVE CONGESTION ON THE RADIO, AND A HARD COPY IS PRODUCED VIA OUR PRINTER IN THE ACFT TO DELETE ANY CONFUSION ON THE READBACK. MY RECOMMENDATION IS TO ALLOW RERTES TO BE RELAYED VIA THE PDC AND IF NEEDED, CONFIRM WITH ATC THAT YOU RECEIVED IT. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: RPTR DID NOT KNOW WHY ATC WAS UNABLE TO FORWARD THE RERTE VIA ACARS. HE SAID THE ACFT WAS A B767. HE SAID HE WOULD TRY TO FIND OUT AND SEND A NEW RPT REFING THIS ONE TO EXPLAIN WHY.
