Narrative:

B737-322 type aircraft phased A-2 check. 4 men assigned to check. 2 experienced 2 new to station, lack of communication between 4 men caused aircraft to depart without 1 item on check being accomplished. That item was accomplished in sfo 52 flight hours later. The check had 51 hours remaining. The check item went 1 hour past normal accomplishment time. Lead stressed importance of communication between all personnel assigned to aircraft as well as maintaining lead abreast of progress, and problems. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the check item missed was the cleaning of the APU lower shroud drains. This item requires opening the lower half of the APU shroud and blowing compressed air through the drains. It was assigned to 2 mechanics who failed to accomplish the job. Reporter completed the job cards and paperwork and was not aware the check item was not completed until after the aircraft was dispatched. Reporter was contacted by the FAA and may be subject to an investigation.

THAT ITEM WAS ACCOMPLISHED IN SFO 52 FLT HRS LATER. THE CHK HAD 51 HRS REMAINING. THE CHK ITEM WENT 1 HR PAST NORMAL ACCOMPLISHMENT TIME. LEAD STRESSED IMPORTANCE OF COM BTWN ALL PERSONNEL ASSIGNED TO ACFT AS WELL AS MAINTAINING LEAD ABREAST OF PROGRESS, AND PROBS. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE CHK ITEM MISSED WAS THE CLEANING OF THE APU LOWER SHROUD DRAINS. THIS ITEM REQUIRES OPENING THE LOWER HALF OF THE APU SHROUD AND BLOWING COMPRESSED AIR THROUGH THE DRAINS. IT WAS ASSIGNED TO 2 MECHS WHO FAILED TO ACCOMPLISH THE JOB. RPTR COMPLETED THE JOB CARDS AND PAPERWORK AND WAS NOT AWARE THE CHK ITEM WAS NOT COMPLETED UNTIL AFTER THE ACFT WAS DISPATCHED. RPTR WAS CONTACTED BY THE FAA AND MAY BE SUBJECT TO AN INVESTIGATION.
