Narrative:

Departed lax on the gorman 1 departure. We were then given a vector heading followed by direct to gorman and a climb to 15000 ft. There were several handoffs during this time. Next with ZLA we were given a heading of 330 degrees and we thought a higher altitude of FL330. The controller was busy and by the time I was able to confirm our altitude we had reached 15600 ft and started back to 15000 ft. The question about our assigned altitude was not immediate when it should have been. As a result, we climbed higher than assigned. Our altitude was confirmed to be 15000 ft and this was maintained until clear of traffic above, 5 mi away. We were then cleared higher and continued without further event. Similar sounding altitudes and headings and the late recognition of the need to verify the altitude contributed to the problem. Supplemental information from acn 355141: seemed similar sounding headings and altitudes contributed to the confusion along with a very busy period of the climb.

Title: ACR MLG ON THE GORMAN 1 SID WAS CLRED DIRECT GMN MAINTAIN 15000 FT. ZLA GAVE A VECTOR OF 330 DEGS AND FLC THOUGHT CLRED TO CLB FL330. CTLR VERY BUSY AND FLC UNABLE TO CONFIRM CLB TO FL330. BEFORE CONTACT MADE WITH ZLA HAD REACHED 15600 FT. CLRNC WAS TO MAINTAIN 15000 FT. WHEN CLR OF TFC 5 MI CLRED TO CLB TO FL330 AND DIRECT SHAFTER.

Narrative: DEPARTED LAX ON THE GORMAN 1 DEP. WE WERE THEN GIVEN A VECTOR HDG FOLLOWED BY DIRECT TO GORMAN AND A CLB TO 15000 FT. THERE WERE SEVERAL HDOFS DURING THIS TIME. NEXT WITH ZLA WE WERE GIVEN A HDG OF 330 DEGS AND WE THOUGHT A HIGHER ALT OF FL330. THE CTLR WAS BUSY AND BY THE TIME I WAS ABLE TO CONFIRM OUR ALT WE HAD REACHED 15600 FT AND STARTED BACK TO 15000 FT. THE QUESTION ABOUT OUR ASSIGNED ALT WAS NOT IMMEDIATE WHEN IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN. AS A RESULT, WE CLBED HIGHER THAN ASSIGNED. OUR ALT WAS CONFIRMED TO BE 15000 FT AND THIS WAS MAINTAINED UNTIL CLR OF TFC ABOVE, 5 MI AWAY. WE WERE THEN CLRED HIGHER AND CONTINUED WITHOUT FURTHER EVENT. SIMILAR SOUNDING ALTS AND HDGS AND THE LATE RECOGNITION OF THE NEED TO VERIFY THE ALT CONTRIBUTED TO THE PROB. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 355141: SEEMED SIMILAR SOUNDING HDGS AND ALTS CONTRIBUTED TO THE CONFUSION ALONG WITH A VERY BUSY PERIOD OF THE CLB.
