Narrative:

Approaching mem descending through 8000 ft we were given clearance to descend to 3000 ft. As we started turn for downwind we had outbound climbing aircraft in sight. We slowed rate of descent and about the same time ATC said we had descended through our assigned altitude of 6000 ft. We stated that our clearance was to 3000 ft and controller said no problem, clear of traffic, descend to 3000 ft. Controller also cleared us for a visual approach without us calling the airport or preceding traffic.

Title: LRG ACFT DSNDING INTO MEM WAS CLRED TO 3000 FT AND ON DOWNWIND FLC SAW AN OUTBOUND ACFT. THEY SLOWED THE DSCNT AND APCH CTLR INTERVENED TELLING THEM THEIR ASSIGNED ALT WAS 6000 FT. FLC HAD READ BACK 3000 FT. CTLR SAID NO PROB AND CLRED THEM FOR A VISUAL APCH BEFORE THEY SAID THEY HAD THE ARPT VISUALLY.

Narrative: APCHING MEM DSNDING THROUGH 8000 FT WE WERE GIVEN CLRNC TO DSND TO 3000 FT. AS WE STARTED TURN FOR DOWNWIND WE HAD OUTBOUND CLBING ACFT IN SIGHT. WE SLOWED RATE OF DSCNT AND ABOUT THE SAME TIME ATC SAID WE HAD DSNDED THROUGH OUR ASSIGNED ALT OF 6000 FT. WE STATED THAT OUR CLRNC WAS TO 3000 FT AND CTLR SAID NO PROB, CLR OF TFC, DSND TO 3000 FT. CTLR ALSO CLRED US FOR A VISUAL APCH WITHOUT US CALLING THE ARPT OR PRECEDING TFC.
