Narrative:

After starting the right engine and after starter cutout, all engine indications were normal except N2 which was 42 percent. Thinking we may have a 13TH stage bleed problem, I increased the right throttle in order to increase N2. Note: we also had an inoperative right generator. When I increased the throttle, N2 did not increase, however, egt went to 505. As N2 did not increase we shut down engine and contacted ord maintenance. Advised them of the N2 problem and they said to restart. I mistakenly believed we were in a post start situation and that my egt limit was 590. The restart was normal with all indications normal. Ord maintenance advised to continue to destination. All indications throughout flight were normal. We questioned tulsa tech on arrival whether an information to maintenance should be written up since we had a post start temperature over 480. He advised me that I had exceeded start egt limit and that a maintenance inspection was required. I therefore flew to my destination without having an inspection done. An inspection was done at destination and no damage occurred.

Title: MD80 SUPER 80 HAD A HUGE START WITH EGT REACHING 505 DEGS, ABOVE THE LIMIT OF 480 DEGS. ENG RESTARTED AND ACFT FLOWN WITHOUT LOGBOOK WRITE-UP.

Narrative: AFTER STARTING THE R ENG AND AFTER STARTER CUTOUT, ALL ENG INDICATIONS WERE NORMAL EXCEPT N2 WHICH WAS 42 PERCENT. THINKING WE MAY HAVE A 13TH STAGE BLEED PROB, I INCREASED THE R THROTTLE IN ORDER TO INCREASE N2. NOTE: WE ALSO HAD AN INOP R GENERATOR. WHEN I INCREASED THE THROTTLE, N2 DID NOT INCREASE, HOWEVER, EGT WENT TO 505. AS N2 DID NOT INCREASE WE SHUT DOWN ENG AND CONTACTED ORD MAINT. ADVISED THEM OF THE N2 PROB AND THEY SAID TO RESTART. I MISTAKENLY BELIEVED WE WERE IN A POST START SIT AND THAT MY EGT LIMIT WAS 590. THE RESTART WAS NORMAL WITH ALL INDICATIONS NORMAL. ORD MAINT ADVISED TO CONTINUE TO DEST. ALL INDICATIONS THROUGHOUT FLT WERE NORMAL. WE QUESTIONED TULSA TECH ON ARR WHETHER AN INFO TO MAINT SHOULD BE WRITTEN UP SINCE WE HAD A POST START TEMP OVER 480. HE ADVISED ME THAT I HAD EXCEEDED START EGT LIMIT AND THAT A MAINT INSPECTION WAS REQUIRED. I THEREFORE FLEW TO MY DEST WITHOUT HAVING AN INSPECTION DONE. AN INSPECTION WAS DONE AT DEST AND NO DAMAGE OCCURRED.
