Narrative:

While taking off, climbed to 20 or 30 ft. Smelled wood burning. My aircraft is constructed of tube fuselage, wood wings with fabric cover. I thought I had a fire on board. I immediately cut the power to get back down to runway. Landed hard on runway. Landing gear gave way, skidded to a stop on runway, exited aircraft with passenger. No fire, no injuries. Wood smoke was from fires at special cookout at restaurant upwind of runway. Not noticeable when on ground, but very noticeable in open cockpit. Sudden power reduction at high altitudes caused high sink rate. Density altitude approximately 9700 ft. Could have eased off power. Lots of runway left.

Title: THE LNDG GEAR COLLAPSED ON AN SMA BIPLANE DURING AN ABORTED TKOF. THE PLT ABORTED WHEN HE SMELLED A WOOD FIRE THAT HE THOUGHT WAS COMING FROM HIS ACFT.

Narrative: WHILE TAKING OFF, CLBED TO 20 OR 30 FT. SMELLED WOOD BURNING. MY ACFT IS CONSTRUCTED OF TUBE FUSELAGE, WOOD WINGS WITH FABRIC COVER. I THOUGHT I HAD A FIRE ON BOARD. I IMMEDIATELY CUT THE PWR TO GET BACK DOWN TO RWY. LANDED HARD ON RWY. LNDG GEAR GAVE WAY, SKIDDED TO A STOP ON RWY, EXITED ACFT WITH PAX. NO FIRE, NO INJURIES. WOOD SMOKE WAS FROM FIRES AT SPECIAL COOKOUT AT RESTAURANT UPWIND OF RWY. NOT NOTICEABLE WHEN ON GND, BUT VERY NOTICEABLE IN OPEN COCKPIT. SUDDEN PWR REDUCTION AT HIGH ALTS CAUSED HIGH SINK RATE. DENSITY ALT APPROX 9700 FT. COULD HAVE EASED OFF PWR. LOTS OF RWY LEFT.
