Narrative:

Departure clearance assigned 3000 ft. At the time of the event I was in cumulus clouds in moderate to severe turbulence. I hit an updraft and was suddenly at 3400 ft. As I attempted to descend, controller asked me to say altitude. I said '3400 ft, attempting to descend to 3000 ft.' controller said 'you have busted your assigned altitude, climb and maintain 6000 ft.' I did as instructed. There was no conflict.
