Narrative:

I had just landed on and exited runway 25. Requested to taxi back for takeoff and was cleared to taxi via taxiway C and taxiway J to runway 25. As I taxied toward the runway on taxiway J, the taxiway became wider and I felt that I was too close to the runway. I heard the tower give takeoff clearance to another aircraft at that time, just as I was about to verify my position with the ground controller, and as I came to a full stop. The next transmission was the tower telling the other plane to abort the takeoff, which they did without incident. Tower then told me that I was past the hold short line and instructed me to make a 180 degree turn and taxi back. As I turned I could see the runway edge marking just ahead. I had taxied past the hold short line, but not onto the runway itself, which seemed to be about 30-40 ft apart. I noticed as I taxied back that the hold short line was not particularly easy to see in my headlight, but I could see it. The tower then cleared the other airplane to taxi back for takeoff, and gave me takeoff clearance. The other plane (a business jet) took off shortly after I did. I tried to figure out why I had missed the hold short line the first time across. I don't recall being particularly distraction. I had received my clearance earlier and was waiting until the hold short line or runup area to set up for the departure. There may have been some other distraction which I don't recall. The hold short line was easier to see from a distance in the landing light than at closer range, as I taxied back across it.

Title: PLT OF PIPER SENECA TAXIES BEYOND HOLD LINE AND TWR ISSUES ABORT CLRNC TO AN ACFT ON TKOF ROLL.

Narrative: I HAD JUST LANDED ON AND EXITED RWY 25. REQUESTED TO TAXI BACK FOR TKOF AND WAS CLRED TO TAXI VIA TXWY C AND TXWY J TO RWY 25. AS I TAXIED TOWARD THE RWY ON TXWY J, THE TXWY BECAME WIDER AND I FELT THAT I WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE RWY. I HEARD THE TWR GIVE TKOF CLRNC TO ANOTHER ACFT AT THAT TIME, JUST AS I WAS ABOUT TO VERIFY MY POS WITH THE GND CTLR, AND AS I CAME TO A FULL STOP. THE NEXT XMISSION WAS THE TWR TELLING THE OTHER PLANE TO ABORT THE TKOF, WHICH THEY DID WITHOUT INCIDENT. TWR THEN TOLD ME THAT I WAS PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND INSTRUCTED ME TO MAKE A 180 DEG TURN AND TAXI BACK. AS I TURNED I COULD SEE THE RWY EDGE MARKING JUST AHEAD. I HAD TAXIED PAST THE HOLD SHORT LINE, BUT NOT ONTO THE RWY ITSELF, WHICH SEEMED TO BE ABOUT 30-40 FT APART. I NOTICED AS I TAXIED BACK THAT THE HOLD SHORT LINE WAS NOT PARTICULARLY EASY TO SEE IN MY HEADLIGHT, BUT I COULD SEE IT. THE TWR THEN CLRED THE OTHER AIRPLANE TO TAXI BACK FOR TKOF, AND GAVE ME TKOF CLRNC. THE OTHER PLANE (A BUSINESS JET) TOOK OFF SHORTLY AFTER I DID. I TRIED TO FIGURE OUT WHY I HAD MISSED THE HOLD SHORT LINE THE FIRST TIME ACROSS. I DON'T RECALL BEING PARTICULARLY DISTR. I HAD RECEIVED MY CLRNC EARLIER AND WAS WAITING UNTIL THE HOLD SHORT LINE OR RUNUP AREA TO SET UP FOR THE DEP. THERE MAY HAVE BEEN SOME OTHER DISTR WHICH I DON'T RECALL. THE HOLD SHORT LINE WAS EASIER TO SEE FROM A DISTANCE IN THE LNDG LIGHT THAN AT CLOSER RANGE, AS I TAXIED BACK ACROSS IT.
