Narrative:

Cruising at FL190 in moderate turbulence, IMC conditions, we were cleared to 17000 ft. The PF disengaged altitude hold of autoplt and I reached for and started the descent checklist. I looked up at altimeters and alerted the PF that we were at FL198. We immediately both pushed forward on yoke to descend. I assisted him, and notified center that we experienced a major updraft, but were now descending. He gave us a heading of 270 degrees (we were presently on a north heading). I believe that the PF disengaged altitude hold of the autoplt and the turbulence caused the aircraft to climb. Previously, the autoplt was having difficulty holding altitude in the rough air. No evasive actions were required.

Title: A CPR LTT CLBED 800 FT WHEN THE ALT HOLD WAS RELEASED. WX FACTORS MODERATE TURB. ALTDEV.

Narrative: CRUISING AT FL190 IN MODERATE TURB, IMC CONDITIONS, WE WERE CLRED TO 17000 FT. THE PF DISENGAGED ALT HOLD OF AUTOPLT AND I REACHED FOR AND STARTED THE DSCNT CHKLIST. I LOOKED UP AT ALTIMETERS AND ALERTED THE PF THAT WE WERE AT FL198. WE IMMEDIATELY BOTH PUSHED FORWARD ON YOKE TO DSND. I ASSISTED HIM, AND NOTIFIED CTR THAT WE EXPERIENCED A MAJOR UPDRAFT, BUT WERE NOW DSNDING. HE GAVE US A HDG OF 270 DEGS (WE WERE PRESENTLY ON A N HDG). I BELIEVE THAT THE PF DISENGAGED ALT HOLD OF THE AUTOPLT AND THE TURB CAUSED THE ACFT TO CLB. PREVIOUSLY, THE AUTOPLT WAS HAVING DIFFICULTY HOLDING ALT IN THE ROUGH AIR. NO EVASIVE ACTIONS WERE REQUIRED.
