Narrative:

Filed and accepted an IFR clearance void from ATC at nashville due to fog at M54 lebanon county airport. When we walked to the aircraft the fog was dissipating rapidly so we took off with a 1200 code. I as PIC assumed if no contact was made to ATC by clearance void time, the clearance would be void. I was wrong. The IFR is still active, it has to be verbally canceled. In the future if my flight profile changes I will notify ATC as soon as possible. After we departed 30 mins later we contacted knoxville approach control for VFR flight following. The controller never notified us that we had erred on our IFR clearance out of M54. The people at FSS called the airport manager and told him that we could have crashed into hinge mountain east of M54. This caused a huge panic at M54 which could have been avoided by people not making assumptions.
