Approach controller canceled a speed restr on an air carrier MD80 on the buj STAR who was following an air carrier DC8 on the same STAR and the MD80 overtook the DC8. Another controller in the TRACON spotted the overtake and warned the approach controller, but corrective action was too late to prevent a system error.

Narrative:

DC8 on buj STAR, MD80 behind, canceled first speed restr for MD80. MD80 caught up with DC8. Failure on my part as radar controller to keep up with situation, assuming second speed on STAR would be complied with. Another control position pointed out overtake and corrective action was then taken.
