Narrative:

Departing VFR from ffz. Level at 3500 ft MSL to stay below class B (phx). I thought we were 5 mi further east than we were. When we contacted phx approach they told us we were 3 NM from sdl and in their airspace, then told us to contact tower. We turned right to exit their airspace and climbed. Soon we were above sdl airspace, so we contacted phx approach on the next frequency and we continued back to prc. Contributing factors: brand new private pilot with brand new CFI. Solution: more vigilance to position while in congested airspace.
