Narrative:

I was flying an assigned heading and altitude (I think it was heading 120 degrees at 5000 ft) towards fmy airport. I saw the airport and tried to call approach to let them know this. I was unable to contact them, so I tried fmy tower, for by now I was only about 12 mi out and had tried unsuccessfully to reach approach several times. I was able to contact the tower and was told I was cleared for the visual approach. Taxiing in I was told to call approach, and did so. Apparently he had also been trying to contact me, but had been unable to.
