Narrative:

Landing on a short and narrow airport. After touchdown, I applied brakes. Differential braking occurred due to the flaps not retracted. Plane rotated (yawed) to the right. Pilot elected to bring aircraft to a stop on mowed, flat grass area adjacent to runway rather than put excess side load on landing gear by jockeying plane back on runway with differential braking. Also keeping plane tracking straight after yaw occurred avoided the potential of a ground loop or wingtip strike. Plane safely stopped on grass. Cause: failure to retract flaps immediately after touchdown. Additional training on short fields scheduled with CFI.

Title: PA28 PLT LNDG ON SHORT FIELD DOES NOT RETRACT FLAPS AND WHEN USING HARD BRAKING HAS DIFFERENTIAL BRAKING OCCUR. RUNS OFF RWY INTO GRASS.

Narrative: LNDG ON A SHORT AND NARROW ARPT. AFTER TOUCHDOWN, I APPLIED BRAKES. DIFFERENTIAL BRAKING OCCURRED DUE TO THE FLAPS NOT RETRACTED. PLANE ROTATED (YAWED) TO THE R. PLT ELECTED TO BRING ACFT TO A STOP ON MOWED, FLAT GRASS AREA ADJACENT TO RWY RATHER THAN PUT EXCESS SIDE LOAD ON LNDG GEAR BY JOCKEYING PLANE BACK ON RWY WITH DIFFERENTIAL BRAKING. ALSO KEEPING PLANE TRACKING STRAIGHT AFTER YAW OCCURRED AVOIDED THE POTENTIAL OF A GND LOOP OR WINGTIP STRIKE. PLANE SAFELY STOPPED ON GRASS. CAUSE: FAILURE TO RETRACT FLAPS IMMEDIATELY AFTER TOUCHDOWN. ADDITIONAL TRAINING ON SHORT FIELDS SCHEDULED WITH CFI.
