Narrative:

I was assigned as captain for this flight by my company, but on this particular leg I was sitting in the right seat doing copilot duties with the chief pilot flying the aircraft. We were climbing and cleared to 10000 ft by ZNY. At 9700 ft we were still climbing at over 2000 FPM and I stated 'check altitude.' the PF noted that the autoplt had kicked off and started to stop the climb at 10000 ft. We went above our assigned altitude by 350-400 ft before descent to the correct altitude. ATC told us to check altitude at the top of our climb and we advised them that we were correcting and that the autoplt had kicked off.
