Narrative:

Departing boise air terminal at dawn, VFR with departure radar advisories. Requested to leave departure frequency to open VFR flight plan with flight service. Opened flight plan. Became aware of alternator malfunction, evaluated the problem and achieved an in-flight correction (temporary). Distracted by the above, I forgot to return to departure frequency until well away from boise airspace. Alternator later failed necessitating a precautionary landing at burley, identification. In-flight electrical problem caused me to forget to return to boise departure frequency after opening VFR flight plan.
