Narrative:

When approaching the gate we had to wait for signal person to show up. While waiting, first officer and myself observed the safety zone clear of any objects. The signal person signaled us into the gate. We stopped, set parking brakes and did the checklists. While saying goodbye to the passenger, a passenger commented that our left engine had struck a belt loader. The first officer confirmed this to be true. While the belt loader was parked behind the safety zone lines, there were 2 sets of lines. Apparently, it was parked behind the wrong one. Very minor damage.
