Narrative:

After passing simon intersection we were cleared to 10000 ft from 12000 ft. At 10400 ft the controller issued a clearance 'direct santa monica.' the first officer entered the new route into the control display unit and asked for verification from the captain. I think that that was the time we were passing through 10000 ft. At 9700 ft the altitude alert horn sounded and we returned immediately to 10000 ft. There were no other aircraft in the area.

Title: AN ACR MLG FLC DSNDS BELOW THEIR ASSIGNED ALT WHILE DISTR BY FMC ENTRIES.

Narrative: AFTER PASSING SIMON INTXN WE WERE CLRED TO 10000 FT FROM 12000 FT. AT 10400 FT THE CTLR ISSUED A CLRNC 'DIRECT SANTA MONICA.' THE FO ENTERED THE NEW RTE INTO THE CTL DISPLAY UNIT AND ASKED FOR VERIFICATION FROM THE CAPT. I THINK THAT THAT WAS THE TIME WE WERE PASSING THROUGH 10000 FT. AT 9700 FT THE ALT ALERT HORN SOUNDED AND WE RETURNED IMMEDIATELY TO 10000 FT. THERE WERE NO OTHER ACFT IN THE AREA.
