Narrative:

Clearance was received from las clearance which stated 'after departure turn right heading 270 degrees proceed on meade 1 departure, peach springs transition. Student in left seat had 270 degrees set on heading bug. I had 360 degrees for meade 1 departure set in my flight director. We were given takeoff clearance on runway 19L with a wake turbulence caution from departing heavy traffic on runway 25. I replied to tower that we needed a couple of mins delay for wake turbulence. Tower then canceled takeoff clearance and informed us to exit the runway. After exiting the runway I informed tower that I could takeoff if I could get an immediate turn out. Tower stated 'expect that.' subsequently I was again cleared for takeoff. Once we became airborne, it was evident that my student was not going to start an immediate turn to the right, so I took the controls and started the turn. With the thought of wake turbulence still weighing heavily on me, I turned (mistakenly) through the 270 degree heading towards 360 degrees. Tower called helicopter traffic at my 2-3 O'clock position low, which I visually picked up. Then I was handed off to departure. Las departure stated that I needed to be on the 270 degree heading. I immediately started a turn to the left. While in the turn, departure stated 'turn left immediately to 250 degrees for aircraft avoidance.' by the time they finished saying this, I was rolling out on a 250 degree heading. I never saw an aircraft in my vicinity while in the turn or after rolling out. I believe that if there had been no confusion on the ground over wake turbulence during my initial takeoff clearance and the student in the left seat had started an early turn, this may not have occurred. It would have also been extremely helpful if tower could have restated my turn-out instructions upon issuing takeoff clearance. The major factor causing me to turn through 270 degrees was the concern over wake turbulence, which led to a mental error on a fairly complicated 'standard instrument departure.'

Title: MIL T44 PLT ATTEMPTING TO AVOID WAKE TURB IS ASKED TO EXIT THE RWY, THEN GETS PERMISSION TO DEPART WITH IMMEDIATE TURN. TURNS BEYOND CLRNC HEADING AND IS GIVEN IMMEDIATE TURN BACK BY ATC.

ONCE WE BECAME AIRBORNE, IT WAS EVIDENT THAT MY STUDENT WAS NOT GOING TO START AN IMMEDIATE TURN TO THE R, SO I TOOK THE CTLS AND STARTED THE TURN. WITH THE THOUGHT OF WAKE TURB STILL WEIGHING HEAVILY ON ME, I TURNED (MISTAKENLY) THROUGH THE 270 DEG HDG TOWARDS 360 DEGS. TWR CALLED HELI TFC AT MY 2-3 O'CLOCK POS LOW, WHICH I VISUALLY PICKED UP. THEN I WAS HANDED OFF TO DEP. LAS DEP STATED THAT I NEEDED TO BE ON THE 270 DEG HDG. I IMMEDIATELY STARTED A TURN TO THE L. WHILE IN THE TURN, DEP STATED 'TURN L IMMEDIATELY TO 250 DEGS FOR ACFT AVOIDANCE.' BY THE TIME THEY FINISHED SAYING THIS, I WAS ROLLING OUT ON A 250 DEG HDG. I NEVER SAW AN ACFT IN MY VICINITY WHILE IN THE TURN OR AFTER ROLLING OUT. I BELIEVE THAT IF THERE HAD BEEN NO CONFUSION ON THE GND OVER WAKE TURB DURING MY INITIAL TKOF CLRNC AND THE STUDENT IN THE L SEAT HAD STARTED AN EARLY TURN, THIS MAY NOT HAVE OCCURRED. IT WOULD HAVE ALSO BEEN EXTREMELY HELPFUL IF TWR COULD HAVE RESTATED MY TURN-OUT INSTRUCTIONS UPON ISSUING TKOF CLRNC. THE MAJOR FACTOR CAUSING ME TO TURN THROUGH 270 DEGS WAS THE CONCERN OVER WAKE TURB, WHICH LED TO A MENTAL ERROR ON A FAIRLY COMPLICATED 'STANDARD INST DEP.'
