Narrative:

I departed chs on an IFR flight plan with an IFR approved GPS. The flight plan was chs direct flo direct sdz direct rdu, with rdu being the destination. Upon departure, on runway 21 I was cleared to 2000 ft heading 040 degrees. There was a thunderstorm at 330 degrees and the controller tried to vector me through it. I refused vector and controller said to head 070 degrees and climb to 9000 ft. After a time, I was cleared direct flo at which time I dialed flo into the VOR portion of the GPS and punched direct. The heading was 040 degrees so I turned, coupled and was fat, dumb and happy. Handed over to myr approach, they inquired after a few mins as to my routing, heading, etc. I stated direct flo, 040 degrees. They suggested turning to 340 degrees for florence. I was dumbfounded until I went back and checked the flo in the GPS. My GPS receiver had locked onto floro (north 61 degrees 35 min, east 50 degrees 1 min) 3500 NM away. Closer inspection did verify that my ete was 21 hours. I dialed in the flo VOR and turned to 350 degrees to correct. If you draw a radial from chs 040 degrees and flo 170 degrees where they intersect, put me approximately 18 NM off V437. It is a good thing that I did not file the victor airway but I definitely was off course direct to the florence VOR. In my busy state, I did not verify my position with the VOR receiver. I mistakenly, blindly, trusted a global ps. Note: I think that floro is in northern russia, somewhere east of molotov (city).

Title: NAV ERROR OCCURS WHEN CORPORATE PLT FAILS TO PROGRAM HIS GPS CORRECTLY. ERROR ADMITTED IN PLT BEHAVIOR COMPLACENCY. ALSO FAILED TO UTILIZE ASSOCIATED VORS FOR NAV CHK. NON ADHERENCE TO ATC IN A HDG TRACK DEV.

Narrative: I DEPARTED CHS ON AN IFR FLT PLAN WITH AN IFR APPROVED GPS. THE FLT PLAN WAS CHS DIRECT FLO DIRECT SDZ DIRECT RDU, WITH RDU BEING THE DEST. UPON DEP, ON RWY 21 I WAS CLRED TO 2000 FT HDG 040 DEGS. THERE WAS A TSTM AT 330 DEGS AND THE CTLR TRIED TO VECTOR ME THROUGH IT. I REFUSED VECTOR AND CTLR SAID TO HEAD 070 DEGS AND CLB TO 9000 FT. AFTER A TIME, I WAS CLRED DIRECT FLO AT WHICH TIME I DIALED FLO INTO THE VOR PORTION OF THE GPS AND PUNCHED DIRECT. THE HDG WAS 040 DEGS SO I TURNED, COUPLED AND WAS FAT, DUMB AND HAPPY. HANDED OVER TO MYR APCH, THEY INQUIRED AFTER A FEW MINS AS TO MY ROUTING, HDG, ETC. I STATED DIRECT FLO, 040 DEGS. THEY SUGGESTED TURNING TO 340 DEGS FOR FLORENCE. I WAS DUMBFOUNDED UNTIL I WENT BACK AND CHKED THE FLO IN THE GPS. MY GPS RECEIVER HAD LOCKED ONTO FLORO (N 61 DEGS 35 MIN, E 50 DEGS 1 MIN) 3500 NM AWAY. CLOSER INSPECTION DID VERIFY THAT MY ETE WAS 21 HRS. I DIALED IN THE FLO VOR AND TURNED TO 350 DEGS TO CORRECT. IF YOU DRAW A RADIAL FROM CHS 040 DEGS AND FLO 170 DEGS WHERE THEY INTERSECT, PUT ME APPROX 18 NM OFF V437. IT IS A GOOD THING THAT I DID NOT FILE THE VICTOR AIRWAY BUT I DEFINITELY WAS OFF COURSE DIRECT TO THE FLORENCE VOR. IN MY BUSY STATE, I DID NOT VERIFY MY POS WITH THE VOR RECEIVER. I MISTAKENLY, BLINDLY, TRUSTED A GLOBAL PS. NOTE: I THINK THAT FLORO IS IN NORTHERN RUSSIA, SOMEWHERE E OF MOLOTOV (CITY).
