Narrative:
Pilot was asked by ATC to continue flying upwind heading for traffic. Told us to pass behind traffic #2 for landing. Pilot responded to clearance but started to turn crosswind. I stopped the turn and said to fly upwind. He called approach to confirm and approach gave us a right turn to a right downwind to runway 17L. I believe that the pilot was complacent in his flying at the time. He had done patterns all his life and didn't think. Pilot had 2200 hours and a CFI in fixed and rotary aircraft. I do not believe a mishap was about to occur as ATC called traffic at 2 mi and 500 ft above.

Title: SMA PLT, TRAINING IN PROGRESS, FAILS TO ADHERE TO ATC CLRNC. TA GIVEN BUT PLT STARTS A HDG TRACK TO DEV THAT WOULD HAVE CREATED A POTENTIAL CONFLICT LTSS.
Narrative: PLT WAS ASKED BY ATC TO CONTINUE FLYING UPWIND HDG FOR TFC. TOLD US TO PASS BEHIND TFC #2 FOR LNDG. PLT RESPONDED TO CLRNC BUT STARTED TO TURN XWIND. I STOPPED THE TURN AND SAID TO FLY UPWIND. HE CALLED APCH TO CONFIRM AND APCH GAVE US A R TURN TO A R DOWNWIND TO RWY 17L. I BELIEVE THAT THE PLT WAS COMPLACENT IN HIS FLYING AT THE TIME. HE HAD DONE PATTERNS ALL HIS LIFE AND DIDN'T THINK. PLT HAD 2200 HRS AND A CFI IN FIXED AND ROTARY ACFT. I DO NOT BELIEVE A MISHAP WAS ABOUT TO OCCUR AS ATC CALLED TFC AT 2 MI AND 500 FT ABOVE.
