Narrative:
Ground control directed us to taxi from the GA ramp to runway 19R. The ramp leads to taxiway C. I had the nos airport diagram open on my lap. After entering taxiway C and looking for the right place to turn onto taxiway D, I became disoriented or distracted or both. I still don't know how or why it happened, but I continued on taxiway C and entered runway 19R while looking for taxiway D. Only as the aircraft passed over the broad white side stripe of the runway and I saw the black surface from tire marks did I realize I had blundered onto a runway to which I had been cleared. I glanced left and right and quickly continued the crossing to get out of danger. (There was no traffic landing or taking off). I was confused and shaken, and called ground control to say I was lost. The ground controller twice responded, 'no problem,' and instructed me to do a 180 degree turn and depart from the side of the intersection I was on. My wife says I've been especially distracted by business problems that last couple of months. Sometimes concentration creates tunnel-vision. What a lesson!
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: A MOONEY PLT GOT CONFUSED WITH ALL OF THE TXWYS AT ICT AND TAXIED ONTO THE RWY WITHOUT CLRNC. ERROR ADMITTED.
Narrative: GND CTL DIRECTED US TO TAXI FROM THE GA RAMP TO RWY 19R. THE RAMP LEADS TO TXWY C. I HAD THE NOS ARPT DIAGRAM OPEN ON MY LAP. AFTER ENTERING TXWY C AND LOOKING FOR THE RIGHT PLACE TO TURN ONTO TXWY D, I BECAME DISORIENTED OR DISTRACTED OR BOTH. I STILL DON'T KNOW HOW OR WHY IT HAPPENED, BUT I CONTINUED ON TXWY C AND ENTERED RWY 19R WHILE LOOKING FOR TXWY D. ONLY AS THE ACFT PASSED OVER THE BROAD WHITE SIDE STRIPE OF THE RWY AND I SAW THE BLACK SURFACE FROM TIRE MARKS DID I REALIZE I HAD BLUNDERED ONTO A RWY TO WHICH I HAD BEEN CLRED. I GLANCED L AND R AND QUICKLY CONTINUED THE XING TO GET OUT OF DANGER. (THERE WAS NO TFC LNDG OR TAKING OFF). I WAS CONFUSED AND SHAKEN, AND CALLED GND CTL TO SAY I WAS LOST. THE GND CTLR TWICE RESPONDED, 'NO PROB,' AND INSTRUCTED ME TO DO A 180 DEG TURN AND DEPART FROM THE SIDE OF THE INTXN I WAS ON. MY WIFE SAYS I'VE BEEN ESPECIALLY DISTRACTED BY BUSINESS PROBS THAT LAST COUPLE OF MONTHS. SOMETIMES CONCENTRATION CREATES TUNNEL-VISION. WHAT A LESSON!
