Narrative:

I had taken off from cae after refueling. I had flight following and was on a VFR flight plan with discrete squawk code. Approximately 40 mi south of clt, I finally got a controller to respond to me. (After 4 previous attempts to contact clt approach.) I notified controller that I was ascending to 10500 ft MSL. He thought (mistakenly) that I was descending and accused me of entering class B airspace which I did not do. The clt approach control was unresponsive to me and misunderstood my declaration that I was ascending.
