Narrative:

Climbing out of ugn with family aboard, second departure controller assigned climb to 11000 ft MSL. Aircraft has altitude 'warning,' but no 'pre-select.' autoplt was engaged to hold 140 degree heading and an attitude yielding 1200-1600 FPM climb. Altitude warning tone is weak, did not get pilot's attention, climb proceeded to 12000 ft MSL before pilot and controller both noticed. Controller re- assigned 12000 ft briefly, then handed off to ZAU who assigned FL230. No known conflicts. Other cockpit distrs (power setting, family chatter, communication tuning) caused inattn to altitude assignment in this climb situation.
