Narrative:

We leveled off at FL290 in the climb. Shortly thereafter, ZTL asked us our assigned altitude and we replied FL290. ZTL said that we should have leveled at FL280 and said he would check with the last sector. He then came back and said we had been given FL280. We had set, and I believe I read back, FL290, the altitude that the aircraft leveled at on the autoplt. ATC informed us that there had been no conflict and cleared us to the next frequency where we were given a new clearance to climb to FL310 as a final altitude.
