Narrative:

The following incident occurred at buf. While taxiing from the FBO, I crossed a hold short line on the apron to runway 32. The ground controller instructed me to taxi via taxiway Q to taxiway D to runway 23. As I approached runway 23, the controller told me to cross runway 23 on taxiway D and hold short of taxiway a to allow an air carrier aircraft to taxi past on taxiway a, then turn right on taxiway a. This leads to the passenger terminals, where, as a student I have never been. I concluded that I had misheard and turned left to follow the air carrier. The controller immediately called me to turn right, this I promptly complied with. At this part of the airport apron, there is a multitude of yellow lines leading to the terminals. I was lost. I tried to find a yellow line leading away from the terminals where I could complete my run-up engine check. At this time, while frantically scanning for flying and taxiing traffic, I crossed a hold short line leading to runway 32. The controller immediately told me taxi back across the hold short line and informed me that I had committed 2 faults. At no time had the controller told me where I was to do my run-up or which runway I was to use for departure. The controller now directed me to runway 32. The wind was 220 degrees at 11 KTS. The ILS runway in use was runway 23. In error I had mentally prepared myself for runway 23 because this was the runway in use. Runway 32 entailed a crosswind of 100 degrees with 11 KTS. As a student, I was not prepared for this type of takeoff, but rather than accrue any more faults, I departed and more by luck made it off. I respectfully submit that ground controllers should announce which runway is going to be used and where the run-up area is going to be, before the pilot is told to taxi. The pilot then has an opportunity to accept or reject the taxi clearance. In addition, I wish to suggest that hold short lines should be painted a highly visible fluorescent red or orange so as to stand out from the faded yellow lines around them. The hold short signs at the runway edge are already in red.

Title: STUDENT PLT TAXIING FOR TKOF CROSSES HOLD SHORT LINE, THEN MAKES WRONG DIRECTION TURN. CTLR CATCHES THE ERRORS.

Narrative: THE FOLLOWING INCIDENT OCCURRED AT BUF. WHILE TAXIING FROM THE FBO, I CROSSED A HOLD SHORT LINE ON THE APRON TO RWY 32. THE GND CTLR INSTRUCTED ME TO TAXI VIA TXWY Q TO TXWY D TO RWY 23. AS I APCHED RWY 23, THE CTLR TOLD ME TO CROSS RWY 23 ON TXWY D AND HOLD SHORT OF TXWY A TO ALLOW AN ACR ACFT TO TAXI PAST ON TXWY A, THEN TURN R ON TXWY A. THIS LEADS TO THE PAX TERMINALS, WHERE, AS A STUDENT I HAVE NEVER BEEN. I CONCLUDED THAT I HAD MISHEARD AND TURNED L TO FOLLOW THE ACR. THE CTLR IMMEDIATELY CALLED ME TO TURN R, THIS I PROMPTLY COMPLIED WITH. AT THIS PART OF THE ARPT APRON, THERE IS A MULTITUDE OF YELLOW LINES LEADING TO THE TERMINALS. I WAS LOST. I TRIED TO FIND A YELLOW LINE LEADING AWAY FROM THE TERMINALS WHERE I COULD COMPLETE MY RUN-UP ENG CHK. AT THIS TIME, WHILE FRANTICALLY SCANNING FOR FLYING AND TAXIING TFC, I CROSSED A HOLD SHORT LINE LEADING TO RWY 32. THE CTLR IMMEDIATELY TOLD ME TAXI BACK ACROSS THE HOLD SHORT LINE AND INFORMED ME THAT I HAD COMMITTED 2 FAULTS. AT NO TIME HAD THE CTLR TOLD ME WHERE I WAS TO DO MY RUN-UP OR WHICH RWY I WAS TO USE FOR DEP. THE CTLR NOW DIRECTED ME TO RWY 32. THE WIND WAS 220 DEGS AT 11 KTS. THE ILS RWY IN USE WAS RWY 23. IN ERROR I HAD MENTALLY PREPARED MYSELF FOR RWY 23 BECAUSE THIS WAS THE RWY IN USE. RWY 32 ENTAILED A XWIND OF 100 DEGS WITH 11 KTS. AS A STUDENT, I WAS NOT PREPARED FOR THIS TYPE OF TKOF, BUT RATHER THAN ACCRUE ANY MORE FAULTS, I DEPARTED AND MORE BY LUCK MADE IT OFF. I RESPECTFULLY SUBMIT THAT GND CTLRS SHOULD ANNOUNCE WHICH RWY IS GOING TO BE USED AND WHERE THE RUN-UP AREA IS GOING TO BE, BEFORE THE PLT IS TOLD TO TAXI. THE PLT THEN HAS AN OPPORTUNITY TO ACCEPT OR REJECT THE TAXI CLRNC. IN ADDITION, I WISH TO SUGGEST THAT HOLD SHORT LINES SHOULD BE PAINTED A HIGHLY VISIBLE FLUORESCENT RED OR ORANGE SO AS TO STAND OUT FROM THE FADED YELLOW LINES AROUND THEM. THE HOLD SHORT SIGNS AT THE RWY EDGE ARE ALREADY IN RED.
