Narrative:

Pilot was cleared for VOR 4 approach, but descended below published fix before crossing fix. Pilot saw runway lights and airport environment and proceeded with visual approach, yet pilot was still technically on an instrument approach and not able to start descending before rudie fix. Pilot had flown around thunderstorms for previous few hours and had become tired. Pilot consulted with cfii and got additional training on instrument approachs as a result of this event.
