Narrative:

En route to stl, we were given a crossing altitude of 15 NM southwest of the foristell VOR at 8000 ft. I was captain and the PNF. My first officer and I confirmed the clearance to each other. I went off line to copy the current ATIS information. When I finished, I realized we were only descending through 8500 ft at 15 NM southwest of the VOR instead of 8000 ft. This did not cause a conflict, however, I discussed it with my first officer on the ground. We both realize the importance of this situation and intend to be more vigilant in high density traffic areas.
