Narrative:

During preflight checks of the aircraft, the pilot was distracted by passenger questions while checking fuel on left wing. The pilot did not replace the fuel cap. After takeoff, on climb out, the tower called the aircraft reporting a local police call of an aircraft leaking fuel. The pilot verified the fuel loss and returned to the airport for an uneventful landing. The left tank was nearly empty, the right tank contained 20 gallons. On takeoff the right had approximately 24 gallons and the left approximately 22 gallons.
