Narrative:
Misunderstanding in altitude cleared to after leveling at FL230. After several clrncs to lower altitudes in our descent we leveled at FL230. Controller (ZDC) asked us to verify our altitude. I replied 'FL230' with no reply from the controller, I asked if we were supposed to be somewhere else to which he replied 'I thought I cleared you to FL240 but you're ok there.' obviously there was a misunderstanding but we do not know on whose part.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: WHEN AN A310 FLC WAS ASKED TO VERIFY THEIR ALT, THEY LEARNED THAT THE CTLR HAD THOUGHT THAT THEY WERE CLRED TO FL240.
Narrative: MISUNDERSTANDING IN ALT CLRED TO AFTER LEVELING AT FL230. AFTER SEVERAL CLRNCS TO LOWER ALTS IN OUR DSCNT WE LEVELED AT FL230. CTLR (ZDC) ASKED US TO VERIFY OUR ALT. I REPLIED 'FL230' WITH NO REPLY FROM THE CTLR, I ASKED IF WE WERE SUPPOSED TO BE SOMEWHERE ELSE TO WHICH HE REPLIED 'I THOUGHT I CLRED YOU TO FL240 BUT YOU'RE OK THERE.' OBVIOUSLY THERE WAS A MISUNDERSTANDING BUT WE DO NOT KNOW ON WHOSE PART.
