Narrative:

We were at 8000 ft assigned. B727 (air carrier Y) was at 9000 ft. We were asked if we could see him and we said yes. Controller told us to climb and maintain visual separation. Also told air carrier Y to descend. We were pointed at each other. A very few seconds later, I was getting an RA (so was he) and banked so as to pass behind him. I was surprised at how little time I had to react. Air carrier Y was pissed. I'm not sure if anything could/should have been done differently. It would be nice if TCASII gave lateral guidance also. That is how we escaped.
