Narrative:

#3 engine fire warning shortly after takeoff. Slats extended -- flaps retracted. Leveled aircraft at 6000 ft MSL and copilot (DC10 flight instructor, giving first leg of IOE to MD80 transition captain) and flight engineer (experienced DC10) initiated engine fail/fire checklist. Captain flew aircraft, handled radios. While retarding #3 throttle through 60-70 percent N1, engine fire light went out. Engine fire system tested ok. Contacted ATC and received delay vector back toward iah. Continued flight with #3 engine at 67 percent N1 as per checklist. Did not dump fuel. Contacted maintenance control on VHF who concurred that it was pneumatic problem. Copilot and flight engineer troubleshot pneumatic system #1, #2 and #3 and suspected failure to be blown high pressure pneumatic duct between #3 engine and #3 engine bleed valve. (5 min delay for trouble shooting). With agreement from maintenance control, added power on #3 engine to maximum continuous thrust for 5 mins with no fire warning indication. Fire warning system tested good and crew elected to evaluate system while continuing on to london. Upon arrival london, found #3 engine 8TH stage duct blown. Flight was normal in all other respects.
