Narrative:

Shortly after takeoff from runway 27 cvg during the landing gear up phase of flight, a loud bang was heard from the #2 engine. The #2 engine then failed with a successful automatic coarsen and was secured at 400 ft AGL. An emergency was declared and a single engine landing was made on runway 18L cvg. The landing was made 235 pounds over maximum landing weight. Aircraft is an SF340A. No unusual engine indications were noted during takeoff roll and everything appeared to be normal when the engine failed. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following information: the reporter does not know why his engine failed. He asked several times shortly after this happened, but no one would tell him.

Title: AN ACR SAAB HAD TO RETURN LAND WHEN ITS R ENG FAILED ON TKOF. EMER DECLARED. SAAB 340A.

Narrative: SHORTLY AFTER TKOF FROM RWY 27 CVG DURING THE LNDG GEAR UP PHASE OF FLT, A LOUD BANG WAS HEARD FROM THE #2 ENG. THE #2 ENG THEN FAILED WITH A SUCCESSFUL AUTO COARSEN AND WAS SECURED AT 400 FT AGL. AN EMER WAS DECLARED AND A SINGLE ENG LNDG WAS MADE ON RWY 18L CVG. THE LNDG WAS MADE 235 LBS OVER MAX LNDG WT. ACFT IS AN SF340A. NO UNUSUAL ENG INDICATIONS WERE NOTED DURING TKOF ROLL AND EVERYTHING APPEARED TO BE NORMAL WHEN THE ENG FAILED. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING INFO: THE RPTR DOES NOT KNOW WHY HIS ENG FAILED. HE ASKED SEVERAL TIMES SHORTLY AFTER THIS HAPPENED, BUT NO ONE WOULD TELL HIM.
