Narrative:

We departed runway 5R from ind at XA55 local. While climbing through about 2500 ft, we both smelled an odor. Then at about 3500 ft we agreed it was smoke in the airplane and decided to return to the field. We did the memory items for smoke in the airplane. The first officer was flying so I donned my mask-headset, microphone selector switch. We then declared an emergency and got clearance to land on runway 5L. The cabin was filling rapidly with smoke. I as captain kept the controls and we were on a base leg by then. The crash fire rescue equipment trucks were just approaching the runway. We then verified the landing final items. At this point we agreed with all the smoke that it would be best to get the plane on the ground and passenger off instead of pulling out the quick reference handbook checklist since we had the memory items done already. As we stopped, I told first officer that I was going to shut down the aircraft and run the quick reference handbook and I wanted him to evacuate/evacuation the aircraft out the main door and that we would meet off the runway in the grass on the left side. First officer then evacuate/evacuationed and took charge of the passenger in a safe and timely matter. About 8 crash fire rescue equipment people walked around and boarded the plane looking for the cause of the smoke. They then isolated the battery. The crash fire rescue equipment manager called 2 buses for the people which took about 15 mins to get there. I called out flight control from the crash fire rescue equipment's cell phone to tell our ind station these people were coming back to the counter. I then went on each bus and explained to the passenger on how the gate personnel would accommodate them. They were very understanding and thanked us for getting them safely on the ground. We then had the plane towed to FBO to get proper maintenance.

Title: ACFT EQUIP PROB. SMOKING BATTERY. SHORTLY AFTER TKOF FLC HAD SMOKE IN THE COCKPIT, DECLARED AN EMER, RETURNED AND LANDED WITH AN EVAC AFTER LNDG.

Narrative: WE DEPARTED RWY 5R FROM IND AT XA55 LCL. WHILE CLBING THROUGH ABOUT 2500 FT, WE BOTH SMELLED AN ODOR. THEN AT ABOUT 3500 FT WE AGREED IT WAS SMOKE IN THE AIRPLANE AND DECIDED TO RETURN TO THE FIELD. WE DID THE MEMORY ITEMS FOR SMOKE IN THE AIRPLANE. THE FO WAS FLYING SO I DONNED MY MASK-HEADSET, MIC SELECTOR SWITCH. WE THEN DECLARED AN EMER AND GOT CLRNC TO LAND ON RWY 5L. THE CABIN WAS FILLING RAPIDLY WITH SMOKE. I AS CAPT KEPT THE CTLS AND WE WERE ON A BASE LEG BY THEN. THE CFR TRUCKS WERE JUST APCHING THE RWY. WE THEN VERIFIED THE LNDG FINAL ITEMS. AT THIS POINT WE AGREED WITH ALL THE SMOKE THAT IT WOULD BE BEST TO GET THE PLANE ON THE GND AND PAX OFF INSTEAD OF PULLING OUT THE QUICK REF HANDBOOK CHKLIST SINCE WE HAD THE MEMORY ITEMS DONE ALREADY. AS WE STOPPED, I TOLD FO THAT I WAS GOING TO SHUT DOWN THE ACFT AND RUN THE QUICK REF HANDBOOK AND I WANTED HIM TO EVAC THE ACFT OUT THE MAIN DOOR AND THAT WE WOULD MEET OFF THE RWY IN THE GRASS ON THE L SIDE. FO THEN EVACED AND TOOK CHARGE OF THE PAX IN A SAFE AND TIMELY MATTER. ABOUT 8 CFR PEOPLE WALKED AROUND AND BOARDED THE PLANE LOOKING FOR THE CAUSE OF THE SMOKE. THEY THEN ISOLATED THE BATTERY. THE CFR MGR CALLED 2 BUSES FOR THE PEOPLE WHICH TOOK ABOUT 15 MINS TO GET THERE. I CALLED OUT FLT CTL FROM THE CFR'S CELL PHONE TO TELL OUR IND STATION THESE PEOPLE WERE COMING BACK TO THE COUNTER. I THEN WENT ON EACH BUS AND EXPLAINED TO THE PAX ON HOW THE GATE PERSONNEL WOULD ACCOMMODATE THEM. THEY WERE VERY UNDERSTANDING AND THANKED US FOR GETTING THEM SAFELY ON THE GND. WE THEN HAD THE PLANE TOWED TO FBO TO GET PROPER MAINT.
