Narrative:

We were approaching msy in marginal VFR conditions for a landing on runway 19. We were cleared for a visual approach and started a close right base turn to the runway. Due to the close approach and the rush to configure the aircraft, we failed to change to tower frequency. Fortunately the tower flashed us a green light and the landing was uneventful. Supplemental information from acn 336773: this was the first leg of my first trip back on the line after a month of initial captain training on another aircraft. I felt I was behind the aircraft due to this. Returning to fly one aircraft after intensive training on another is not conducive to good situational awareness.
