Narrative:

Descending into key west, we were assigned 12000 ft. My spouse, who is multi-engine rated pilot, but not C500 type rated, normally handles the radios and altitude preselect. She selected 12000 ft in the altitude preselect but didn't arm the autoplt altitude mode. I realized that we hadn't captured the altitude as we were passing 11500 ft, and added pitch and power to correct as the controller called us and told us to level at 10000 ft as we were below assigned altitude due to traffic. (We did have traffic in sight throughout.) I need to doublechk autoplt arming on climbs and dscnts as my wife is not as familiar with the autoplt flight director.
