Narrative:

Location: 40 mi south of nepta over the gulf deviating around WX. Autoplt disengaged, aircraft gained 200 ft then lost 500 ft then the left engine compressor stalled which lasted 20-30 seconds. Tried to declare an emergency but out of radio contact due to precipitation. Squawked 7700 and transmitted in the blind. Once through turbulence which lasted 30 seconds to 1 min, the compressor stall cleared. Passenger and flight attendants had been instructed to take seats with belts fastened approximately 2-3 mins prior to the incident. WX radar showed no significant returns within 25-30 mi of aircraft. Diverted to tpa for required inspections. Landed uneventfully and no injuries reported.

Title: ACFT ENTERED INTO SEVERE WX, L ENG HAD COMPRESSOR STALL, BUT FLC UNABLE TO CONTACT ATC TO DECLARE EMER DUE TO PRECIPITATION AND STATIC. AFTER EXITING WX, COMPRESSOR STALL CLRED AND THE ACFT DIVERTED TO INSPECT THE ACFT.

PAX AND FLT ATTENDANTS HAD BEEN INSTRUCTED TO TAKE SEATS WITH BELTS FASTENED APPROX 2-3 MINS PRIOR TO THE INCIDENT. WX RADAR SHOWED NO SIGNIFICANT RETURNS WITHIN 25-30 MI OF ACFT. DIVERTED TO TPA FOR REQUIRED INSPECTIONS. LANDED UNEVENTFULLY AND NO INJURIES RPTED.
