Narrative:

Aircraft based at dtw (class B) for 25 yrs. Received taxi instructions to 'taxi to, and hold short at S5, runway 21L.' (approximately 100 yds.) after holding for several arriving aircraft and having just put tower frequency into standby, pilot hears transmission he believes is position and hold. Reading back erroneous clearance, he taxies onto active and during pre takeoff scan, realizes that he is still on ground frequency. He switched to tower in time to hear tower say, 'not in contact with aircraft on runway!' pilot is instructed to depart runway. Pilot aborts flight and requests taxi clearance back to the t-hangars. 3 parallel runways were in use and intersection where incident occurred is the most used departure point for hangar tenants and FBO. 2 pilot passenger onboard (both long time tenants), plus the PIC familiarity with airport operations gave this pilot a false sense of complacency which was not warranted under these conditions.

Title: A BE35 PLT THOUGHT THAT HE HAD RECEIVED CLRNC TO TAXI INTO POS AND HOLD AFTER HAVING HELD SHORT OF THE RWY FOR SEVERAL ARRIVING ACFT. AFTER READING BACK THE TKOF CLRNC WHILE STILL ON THE GND CTLR'S FREQ, THE PLT TAXIED INTO POS BEFORE RECOGNIZING HIS MISTAKE. WHEN THE PLT SWITCHED TO THE TWR FREQ, HE WAS TOLD TO TAXI CLR OF THE RWY.

Narrative: ACFT BASED AT DTW (CLASS B) FOR 25 YRS. RECEIVED TAXI INSTRUCTIONS TO 'TAXI TO, AND HOLD SHORT AT S5, RWY 21L.' (APPROX 100 YDS.) AFTER HOLDING FOR SEVERAL ARRIVING ACFT AND HAVING JUST PUT TWR FREQ INTO STANDBY, PLT HEARS XMISSION HE BELIEVES IS POS AND HOLD. READING BACK ERRONEOUS CLRNC, HE TAXIES ONTO ACTIVE AND DURING PRE TKOF SCAN, REALIZES THAT HE IS STILL ON GND FREQ. HE SWITCHED TO TWR IN TIME TO HEAR TWR SAY, 'NOT IN CONTACT WITH ACFT ON RWY!' PLT IS INSTRUCTED TO DEPART RWY. PLT ABORTS FLT AND REQUESTS TAXI CLRNC BACK TO THE T-HANGARS. 3 PARALLEL RWYS WERE IN USE AND INTXN WHERE INCIDENT OCCURRED IS THE MOST USED DEP POINT FOR HANGAR TENANTS AND FBO. 2 PLT PAX ONBOARD (BOTH LONG TIME TENANTS), PLUS THE PIC FAMILIARITY WITH ARPT OPS GAVE THIS PLT A FALSE SENSE OF COMPLACENCY WHICH WAS NOT WARRANTED UNDER THESE CONDITIONS.
