Narrative:

Had just checked in with dulles approach while climbing to 8000 ft, our assigned altitude. First officer was PF and we were deviating around buildups and areas of virga. TCASII issued a TA for traffic which we both began searching for. Dulles called and inquired as to our assigned altitude and we realized that we had climbed through our assigned altitude of 8000 ft to approximately 8500 ft. We responded, '8000 ft' and adjusted the altitude to 8000 ft.
