Narrative:

While descending from 16000 ft MSL to 11000 ft MSL, ZME cleared our aircraft to continue descent to 8000 ft MSL. Approximately upon reaching 13000 ft MSL we were handed off to ZTL. After descending through 10000 ft MSL, ZTL queried us about our assigned altitude. We responded that we had been cleared for descent to 8000 ft MSL, but asked ZTL to verify this with ZME. ZTL then notified us that we had not been cleared from 11000 ft MSL to 8000 ft MSL by ZME, but that we could now remain at 8000 ft MSL. I believe this occurrence could have been prevented if ZME would have corrected us when we repeated that we were cleared from 11000 ft MSL to 8000 ft MSL.

Title: WHILE DSNDING FROM 16000 FT TO 11000 FT THE RPTR HEARD A ZME CLRNC TO DSND TO 8000 FT. ABOUT 13000 FT ON HDOF TO ZTL THE FLT RPTED DSNDING TO 8000 FT. ZTL QUESTIONED THE CLRNC TO 8000 FT. ON CHKING WITH ZME, ZTL SAID THE FLT WAS NOT CLRED TO 8000 FT BUT TO REMAIN AT 8000 FT.

Narrative: WHILE DSNDING FROM 16000 FT MSL TO 11000 FT MSL, ZME CLRED OUR ACFT TO CONTINUE DSCNT TO 8000 FT MSL. APPROX UPON REACHING 13000 FT MSL WE WERE HANDED OFF TO ZTL. AFTER DSNDING THROUGH 10000 FT MSL, ZTL QUERIED US ABOUT OUR ASSIGNED ALT. WE RESPONDED THAT WE HAD BEEN CLRED FOR DSCNT TO 8000 FT MSL, BUT ASKED ZTL TO VERIFY THIS WITH ZME. ZTL THEN NOTIFIED US THAT WE HAD NOT BEEN CLRED FROM 11000 FT MSL TO 8000 FT MSL BY ZME, BUT THAT WE COULD NOW REMAIN AT 8000 FT MSL. I BELIEVE THIS OCCURRENCE COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED IF ZME WOULD HAVE CORRECTED US WHEN WE REPEATED THAT WE WERE CLRED FROM 11000 FT MSL TO 8000 FT MSL.
