Narrative:

We were making a visual approach from the north to swf runway 27 just after dark. WX was almost clear with visibility reported 20 mi. We tuned in all the navaids, but at the angle we were approaching, they were of little help until on final. As we started a turn to the airport, we realized we were looking at orange county. With approval from the tower, we flew overhead swf and entered left downwind for runway 27. No other traffic was in the pattern and the tower indicated no conflict.
